COLUMBUS, Ohio—Gov. Mike DeWine has named Dan McCarthy, a former top aide who led a political nonprofit used by FirstEnergy to help fund the House Bill 6 bribery scheme, to the Ohio State Racing Commission.

McCarthy, who now works as a state government lobbyist, has been involved with horse racing in the past, though critics say the governor shouldn't have appointed someone with his past connections to dark money.
